Duas for prayer & every day

A quick reference with Arabic, transliteration, and translation — the duas of salah in the order they're recited, the after-prayer adhkar, and the everyday duas.

In the prayer, in order

Everything recited inside salah, from the opening takbir to the closing salam. Only universally-established texts; sources at collection level.

Opening takbir

Allahu akbar

Allah is the Greatest.

Raise your hands and say it to begin the prayer, and again at each change of position.

Opening dua (thana)

Glory be to You, O Allah, and all praise. Blessed is Your name, exalted is Your majesty, and there is no god but You.

Said quietly in the first rakah, right after the opening takbir.

Sunan Abi Dawud & Jami` at-Tirmidhi

Seeking refuge (taʿawwudh)

Aʿudhu billahi mina sh-shaytani r-rajim

I seek refuge in Allah from Shaytan, the rejected.

Basmala

Bismillahi r-rahmani r-rahim

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Then recite Surah al-Fatiha, and after it a short surah in the first two rakats.

In ruku (bowing)

×3

Subhana rabbiya l-ʿazim

Glory be to my Lord, the Magnificent.

Rising from ruku

Samiʿa llahu liman hamidah — then: Rabbana wa laka l-hamd

Allah hears the one who praises Him. Our Lord, to You belongs all praise.

In sujud (prostration)

×3

Subhana rabbiya l-aʿla

Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.

Sitting between the two sujuds

Rabbi ghfir li, rabbi ghfir li

My Lord, forgive me; my Lord, forgive me.

Tashahhud

All greetings, prayers and good things are for Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.

Said sitting, after every two rakats and in the final sitting.

Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim

Salawat (in the final sitting)

O Allah, send Your blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim; You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, send Your grace upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You graced Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim; You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.

Sahih al-Bukhari

A dua before salam

Rabbana atina fi d-dunya hasanatan wa fi l-akhirati hasanatan wa qina ʿadhaba n-nar

Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

Any dua may be made here; this one from the Qur’an (2:201) is a favorite.

Qur’an 2:201

Taslim: ending the prayer

After the prayer

The adhkar said after the taslim.

Ayat al-Kursi

The Verse of the Throne (Qur’an 2:255).

Recited once after each prayer.

Qur’an 2:255 · Sunan an-Nasa`i

La ilaha illa llah

There is no god but Allah, alone, without partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He has power over all things.

Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim

Every day

The small set every child is taught first — waking, eating, wudu, the masjid, the adhan.

On waking up

All praise is for Allah who gave us life after taking it, and to Him is the return.

Sahih al-Bukhari

Before sleeping

Bismika llahumma amutu wa ahya

In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live.

Sahih al-Bukhari

Before eating

Bismillah

In the name of Allah.

If you forget and remember mid-meal: "Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu."

Sunan Abi Dawud & Jami` at-Tirmidhi

After eating

Alhamdu lillahi lladhi atʿamana wa saqana wa jaʿalana muslimin

All praise is for Allah who fed us, gave us drink, and made us Muslims.

Sunan Abi Dawud & Jami` at-Tirmidhi

After wudu

I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, alone without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.

Sahih Muslim

Entering the masjid

Allahumma ftah li abwaba rahmatik

O Allah, open for me the doors of Your mercy.

Step in with your right foot.

Sahih Muslim

Leaving the masjid

Allahumma inni as’aluka min fadlik

O Allah, I ask You of Your bounty.

Step out with your left foot.

Sahih Muslim

After the adhan

Allahumma rabba hadhihi d-daʿwati t-tammah wa s-salati l-qa’imah, ati Muhammadani l-wasilata wa l-fadilah, wa bʿath-hu maqaman mahmudani lladhi waʿadtah

O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and the prayer to be established, grant Muhammad the intercession and favor, and raise him to the praised station You have promised him.

Sahih al-Bukhari
